Before: the existing garage door

The before photo shows the original white garage door on this Tsawwassen home, set into white stucco with dark roof trim above. Before any coating goes on, we assess the existing surface, how the current finish is holding up and whether there are any areas that need patching, because the condition of what's already on the door determines how it needs to be prepared. On this project, minor imperfections were patched and prepared where required.

Preparing the garage door for painting

Preparation was completed before any paint was sprayed, and small imperfections were patched and prepared where needed. Prep is what separates a repaint that looks clean and lasts from one that fails early: it's about adhesion (so the new coating bonds to the door), appearance (so the finished surface is smooth), and uniformity (so the colour and sheen are even across every panel). A garage door faces full weather and, in Tsawwassen, coastal salt air, so getting the surface right before coating matters.

Professional spray application

For this door, the coating was applied by professional spray. When the surface and conditions are suitable, spraying a garage door produces a smooth, consistent finish across all of the raised panels and avoids the visible brush and roller texture you often get on flat door faces.

The goal is even coverage and a clean, uniform look from panel to panel. Surrounding surfaces were protected as part of the process so the finish stayed only where it belonged.

Why we used Sherwin-Williams Emerald exterior

The door was finished in Sherwin-Williams Emerald Exterior Acrylic Latex, a premium exterior paint and primer in one. Sherwin-Williams states that Emerald Exterior resists blistering, peeling, fading and dirt pickup, and forms a mildew-resistant coating: all useful qualities for a garage door that takes direct sun and weather. It's a premium exterior coating we selected for its durability and exterior performance.

This project was finished in a satin sheen. Sherwin-Williams describes satin as having a slight gloss and a richer appearance: a good fit when a homeowner wants a clean, finished look on the door without a high-shine finish.

After: the finished garage door

The after photo shows the completed door in its new colour, crisp against the white stucco. Because the garage door takes up such a large share of the front of many homes, repainting it changes the look of the whole exterior: a relatively small project with an outsized effect on curb appeal. On this Tsawwassen home, the fresh finish gives the front a cleaner, more modern, more finished appearance.

How much did this garage door repaint cost in Tsawwassen?

This specific Texora Painting & Drywall garage-door repainting project in Tsawwassen cost $400. $400 is the price of this project: it isn't a guaranteed universal price for painting any garage door.

What another garage door costs to repaint depends on factors such as:

  • The size of the door (single vs. double)
  • The condition of the existing coating
  • How much surface preparation is required
  • Any repairs or patching needed
  • The door's design and panel detail
  • Accessibility of the work area
  • Whether it's a colour change
  • The coating and number of coats required

The most reliable way to know what your door would cost is a quick look and a written estimate.

Can you repaint a garage door instead of replacing it?

In many cases, yes. When the existing garage door is structurally serviceable and still operating properly, as it was on this Tsawwassen project, and the goal is to restore or change its painted appearance, repainting is a practical, lower-cost alternative to replacement.

What painting won't do is fix a mechanical or structural problem: if a door is damaged, warped, or not operating safely, that's a repair or replacement question, not a paint question. For this door, the surface simply needed refreshing, which made a professional repaint the right call.
